Using design conditions that are up to date with the latest weather trends can provide better outcomes for designers, builders and their clients.
As such, we will soon be introducing a new set of design conditions to CAMEL⁺ based on recent weather data provided by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, spanning from the years 2000 to 2021. The newly introduced data set will also include approximately 760 locations – a significant increase from the 600 locations included in the previous 1990-2013 data set.
Additionally, the majority of the weather stations used for the new design conditions now automatically record temperature readings on the hour. This means that the data they report is generally more accurate than what was used in the previous weather data set, where the temperatures in most locations were recorded manually on site only twice per day.
Some interesting findings from the latest data set:
- Across all weather station locations in Australia, both the comfort and critical summer conditions have risen by approximately 1°C on average, with the highest average increases seen in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
- The winter design conditions have risen by approximately 0.3°C on average across Australia, with the highest average increases seen in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland.
- Looking at the critical design conditions for each month in further detail, the hottest calendar months of January and December saw the largest increases in temperature, followed closely by the shoulder season months of April and October.
